Do you have balance?

Balance is a word that often immobilises people. We have this cultural idea that balance means finding the right way to fit everything ever into your life. The problem is so often we are trying to fit 48 hours into 24. Everywhere we look there's a “system”, a “hack” or a scheme that promises to help you do everything you want in one day and to be fair it almost always looks good on paper but in practice it rarely works. Balance is not about attaining the right to-do list or about getting everything done. Balance is a state of intuitive awareness that we are all continually growing into. I manage to get a lot done. Most weeks I do all of my clients, get 6 blogs written, 2 mailing lists, I aim for 5000 words in my books, get a painting/commission work done, finish a song, write 5 poems and find time to rehearse, work out and go on dates with Stu. I don't do all of this because of a system, I do it because it is born out of an intuitive place within me that lends itself to that energy.

There are times, days, sometimes weeks where my intuition says “Take a break” and I have to listen to that. Being a creature of habit, like most people, when I stop doing something even for a little bit I feel like something is missing. I guess it's the Virgo part of my nature. I like lists, I like order and if I haven't done my blog by the end of the day or written my poem I just don't feel right. Even though I don't feel right that doesn't mean that intuitively that what I'm doing is wrong. Because we call intuitive awareness a “feeling” it often get's lumped in with our emotions. The thing is sometimes my intuition has asked me to do things that are incredibly emotionally uncomfortable but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done. If your gut is telling you to get out of a relationship that is harming you then that doesn't mean you'll feel amazing before, during or after. It just means that your path to your joy is calling you and this is the next necessary step. You will feel relief though. That's a little tell tale sign I get when I know I am following my gut. When the resistance to your inner voice has gone it will feel like ease, relief, letting go.

So if you want to create balance, real, lasting balance then it doesn't come from figuring out how to fit a tonne of things in your day. Create habits by all means, writing blogs is now a habit for me, writing poems is now a habit, and I almost over look them because they are such an intrinsic part of my day. But it's about creating that silence within you that's born from a mindful meditation on your life. Balance is the point between you and your spirit. If your heart is full, open and vulnerable then you have balance and everything else is just time management. If you want to achieve that then that's a whole other blog! But for now be easy on yourself, relax into your day and take the time to listen to who you really are. Balance is an inside job not an outside practice.
