Are you really connecting?

Are you really connecting?

Yesterday I woke up with the sun streaming through the windows, my other half snoozing next to me and my dog waiting outside the bedroom door to be let in. In that wonderful, glorious summer moment... I picked up my phone to check facebook. As soon as I did it I had a private giggle to myself and thought about how often I automatically do that. In this brilliant morning with a view of the ocean and birds tweeting in the trees I bury my head in a device that ironically is designed to help us “connect”. How often do we do that? How often do couples sit with each other these days and “play” on their phones? Has it cost us a part of our connection? Do we sit in the park these days and soak up the sun or do we fill any spare moments these days with social media?

Current technology has provided some amazing ways for us to connect and share with each other but I can't help but feel it has had some what of an opposite effect. Has it made us more loving or given our ego's a false sense of celebrity? Has it created a new way for us to connect or more places or us to hide from each other? I think it's all about balance. When you are celebrating the current moment and technology, or anything else for that matter, just happens to be a part of that celebration then for me that feels better. If using things like social media is just another way to help you detach from where you are, escape from what you are thinking, or provide another platform for you to hide from your true self then it isn't serving you.

While building a technology to help us connect to each other let's not forget that in order to truly do that we must first connect to ourselves. Is there room or more connection in your life?
