As some of you know last year me and Stu spent a week sunning ourselves on the beautiful island of Kos. I highly recommend it to everyone, we had such a beautiful time there. Because we went later in the season it was also quieter than usual even though our hotel was fully booked. We walked along the deserted beach at night and spent our days by the pool surrounded by silence and I spent my time reading and journalling. It was that trip that really hit home to me how necessary it is for us to physically get away from our routine to relax fully. Some people, including myself don't ever fully unplug until they are physically removed from their environment. That's why I have organized so many little excursions this year for us. There is something about removing yourself from everything that is familiar that roots you in the real self. It was interesting watching myself keep up pace with routine for the first two days of the relaxing, then a wave of relief as the stress left my body and then I sank into my surroundings allowing myself to fully enjoy the moment. I have taken as much of that feeling as I can and brought it home with me although I have to admit that this year now that I have decided to set up my art and promote it like a business that I have let go of a bit of my free down time which has affected my relaxation.
The information age has made us contactable 24 hours a day and although I do my best to keep plugged in there are times when the phone needs to go off and be put in another room and I need my yoga mat or some crappy sci fi on the telly. I actually love social media. I think it's been brilliant in helping us to reach out and connect with each other in ways we never would have before. Through it I have been forced to face up to people I buried in my past and I have connected with old friends I might never have come across again. What I think social media has done is connect us to the idea of a global community. No matter how much the media perpetuates it's “divide and conquer” narrative and it's attempt to keep us afraid of each other we get to physically see that, for the most part, we are all alike. I love that it's slowly doing that. When we drop any fascade that we carry we get to use everything available to us to connect our real selves with other people real selves. The online world is exactly like the flesh and blood one, you find what's on your level.
I think that once you have unwound totally from everything that is familiar to you then you get to see the bare bones of who you are. You strip back layers of habit and reaction and sink into the delicious centre of your spirit. The more you do that, the more you allow yourself to unwind fully the more you are able to bring your authentic self to your life and the world around you. When we operate from our hearts instead of our habits we are more compassionate, we are more loving, we express more kindness and we honor everyone around us even if we disagree with them. Do what needs to be done to get yourself to this place of clarity. Go on breaks, find a lodge or a cottage for a day or two, get out of the routine of your life and look at it from a different angel. If you can't get away close the doors, draw the curtains, turn off the phones and just sit with some candles burning and some incense and relax into your own thoughts. Figure out the difference between the real you and the person you have been taught to be.
Thank you for listening,
Big Love,
